Welcome message from the Dean

Welcome to the Faculty of Science at the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB). Our centre houses the degrees in Biology, Biochemistry, Pharmacy, Physics and Chemistry.

The faculty aims to be a space where university teaching meets top-notch research and knowledge transfer, and where lecturers provide students with fair and inclusive training in the skills and competencies necessary to develop their future professional and research activities in a critical and innovative way. The UIB is consolidated in the range of 601-700 best universities in the world (17-20 in Spain) according to the 2024 Academic Ranking of World Universities released by Shanghai Ranking Consultancy. Similarly, the Best Global Universities (2024-2025) Ranking published by US News and powered by Clarivate, ranked the UIB in position 769 (17 in Spain). Highlighting the UIB in both rankings in various disciplines related to the sciences.

Quality education is the basis for improving our lives and fostering a sustainable development (Sustainable Development Goals, United Nations). All members of our faculty's community strive from their own speciality to provide comprehensive quality learning. Our student-lecturer ratio is kept low so that students profit from direct, up-close and quick contact with lecturers, enabling ongoing transfer between lecturers' research and classroom teaching. Moreover, we are committed to ensuring that learning is aimed at promoting sustainable human development, respects human rights and gender equality, promotes a culture of peace and prizes diversity. We are also committed to assuring our facilities take into account the needs of everyone, offering safe, inclusive and effective learning for all. Finally, let us not forget the work done by our admin and services staff, who help us attain our educational goals as well.

Alongside regulated training, we aim to strengthen scientific education and outreach beyond academe and into society as a whole.

At our faculty, participation is key. Whether through the Faculty Board or the Management Committee, we want to hear from you and look forward to your many different visions and opinions, which will surely help us improve, broaden our horizons and learn from one another. If the Faculty of Science aims to be a scientific benchmark for equality, justice and social progress, it must be a focal point for scientific dialogue and training in which to put forward alternative approaches and serve society at large.

A warm welcome to you all.
